A PARLIAMENTARY motion has been tabled by Plaid Cymru Members of Parliament in Westminster to safeguard Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau as the only national anthem of Welsh sports teams and competitors.
The motion has been tabled in response to a campaign which calls on Welsh and Scottish sporting fans to sing God Save the Queen before their retrospective national anthems whilst making the case for England to have its own anthem.
The England in My Heart campaign group is calling on those who want to “remain part of the union” to “show their loyalty” by singing God Save the Queen at sporting events.
Dwyfor Meirionnydd MP Liz Saville Roberts said: “I have some sympathy with calls for a uniquely English anthem for sporting events, but who in their right mind would think that Scottish and Welsh rugby fans would welcome the opportunity to sing God Save the Queen at every game when they have their own unique anthems?
“Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau is firmly rooted in the fabric of Welsh life and inextricably associated with Welsh sporting events.
“The thought of singing anything other than our unique anthem is beyond parody.”
