Dwyfor Meirionnydd MP Liz Saville Roberts has once again called for a stop on travel from lockdown areas within the UK.

At today’s Prime Minister’s Questions Mrs Saville Roberts called on the UK Government to tell people in Covid breakout areas in England facing extra restrictions not to travel outside their local area, as is the case in Wales.

The majority of Wales now faces restrictions on movement outside of a local authority area. People facing extra local measures in England face no such restrictions.

Ms Saville Roberts called on the Prime Minister to review this guidance to ensure people travelling from areas of England where there are high infection rates do not transport the virus to areas across the UK where coronavirus infections are more manageable or in decline.

She raised the issue on the floor of the House of Commons with the Prime Minister on Tuesday, 22 September and wrote to him following the exchange but has not received a reply.

The Welsh First Minister yesterday followed Plaid Cymru’s calls and said that there should be a ban people in locked-down parts of England from travelling to Wales on holiday.

Speaking at PMQs, Mrs Saville Roberts said: "From tomorrow, 2.3 million people in Wales won’t be able to travel out of county without good reason. Yet people from lockdown areas in England can still visit rural Wales.

"Travelling from Betws-y-Coed to Beddgelert could land you with a fine. But Rochdale to Rhosneigr? No problem.

"I raised this with the Prime Minister last week. Leisure travel from lockdown areas has got to stop. Will he make good on this today?"

The Prime Minister ignored the question in his answer, saying that “illogicalities” in dealing with the pandemic were inevitable.

Following PMQs, Mrs Saville Roberts said: “The vast majority of Welsh people are now being asked not to leave their local authority area as communities fight collectively to push down rising infection rates. These efforts could be hamstrung by tourists from outside of Wales travelling from high-infection areas.

“The only ‘illogicality’ is the Prime Minister ignoring good public health practice in the middle of a pandemic.

“We’ve seen queues of walkers on top of mountains and traffic jams outside tourist destinations, whilst people who live locally are told not to travel. It isn’t fair, it isn’t safe and it isn’t helping to stop the spread of the virus.

“Yet again, I’m urging the Prime Minister to review the guidance for people facing local lockdowns in England to ensure that people do not travel outside of their local area unless it is necessary.”
