CEREDIGION MP Ben Lake has called on the UK Government to deny the US President a state visit after Donald Trump provoked outrage by retweeting anti-Muslim messages from a member of Britain First.
President Trump retweeted three inflammatory videos from the far-right account of Jayda Fransen, the deputy leader of Britain First on Wednesday.
The unverified videos depicted purported Muslims assaulting people and, in one video, smashing a statue of the Virgin Mary.
The retweets were met with outrage from UK politicians, with Prime Minister Theresa May saying that President Trump was “wrong”.
Mrs May’s official spokesman said: “It is wrong for the president to have done this.”
The UK Government has now come under increasing pressure to cancel a planned state visit to the UK by the president.
Mr Lake joined the calls, and spoke in the House of Commons on Thursday.
“The messages of hate spread by the US President should be condemned as the vile acts they truly are,” said the MP.
“I urge the Government to rescind its offer of a state visit to the president, who has used his global platform to amplify intolerance.”
Downing Street officials have said that the state visit invitation still stood.
