After nine years representing Montgomeryshire, Glyn Davies has officially ended his career as an MP as Parliament breaks up ahead of the December General Election.

Mr Davies, who was elected as the Conservative MP for Montgomeryshire in 2010 and has defended the seat at two subsequent elections, announced his decision to not seek re-election back in May.

The 75-year-old said at the time that he would leave at the next election “whenever that may be”, calling it a “very difficult and emotional” decision.

With Parliament ending last week ahead of the General Election on 12 December, Mr Davies said he had “cleared out his office” for the last time on what was a “real milestone day”.

“I really didn’t want this election,” he said.

“I wanted us to deliver Brexit first. But the opposition parties will just keep on delaying Brexit, no matter what.

“In the end, there was not much choice.

“We need to elect MPs who will deliver Brexit and let our politics recover and replace what’s become a zombie Parliament.

“I will miss it though.”

Mr Davies is remaining active on the campaign trail to “ensure [Conservative candidate] Craig Williams is elected to succeed me in Montgomeryshire”.

Before serving as MP, Mr Davies served as a Welsh Assembly member for eight years.

The chair and president of Montgomeryshire Conservative Association, Ruth Canning and Robert Harvey, praised Mr Davies’s achievements for the constituency including “fighting to ensure that accident and emergency services remain in Shrewsbury Hospital and, along with Assembly Member Russell George, for the Newtown bypass after so many years”.

“Most important of all, his principles and determined stance, along with the alliance of protest groups, in the prevention of the construction of the devastating mid-Wales pylon line across some of the most beautiful scenery on the planet,” they said.

Prospective candidates for the Montgomeryshire election at the time of going to press are: Kishan Devani (Liberal Democrats); Kait Duerden (Labour); Oliver Lewis (Brexit Party); and Craig Williams (Conservative).

Nominations to stand in the 12 December election close on Thursday, 14 November.
