TRUSTEES of Llandysul Swimming Pool are drawing up bold plans to take over the town’s leisure centre and save it from possible closure, the Cambrian News can reveal.
The move follows Ceredigion County Council’s invitation for “expressions of interest” from groups over the future running of the facility.
Chair of trustees Gareth Bryant confirmed this week they had approached County Hall before the deadline expired on Friday.
“The swimming pool is connected to the leisure centre, so it makes sense to take it over and run it as a single facility,” he said.
“The council has acknowledged our approach so now we must wait and see where we go from here – there’s still a long way to go.
“The pool had a cut in funding of £42,000 two years ago and we’re struggling to keep it open. And the leisure centre has been running at a loss.
“It’s difficult to generate sufficient income in a small village such as this.
“If we do take it on, we will be asking the council to give us an initial subsidy and looking at ways of cutting costs.
“We wouldn’t be looking to run it at a profit, our priority would be to try and safeguard its future.”
A county council spokesperson said: “Following an earlier Cabinet decision, the county council is seeking expressions of interest from groups for the future running of Llandysul Leisure Centre. The closing date for receipt of expressions of interest was 20 May.”
