MONTGOMERYSHIRE has one of the worst levels of superfast broadband access of any area in Wales, according to Russell George, AM.

The shadow Cabinet secretary for the economy has expressed alarm at figures from Think Broadband, which show that only 59 per cent of households in Montgomeryshire have access to superfast broadband, compared with the Wales average of 87 per cent.

With an increasing number of people across Wales relying on the internet on a daily basis, Welsh Government ministers have been urged to act to ensure that Montgomeryshire stops lagging behind other areas of Wales, and to do more to stimulate take-up in areas which already have access.

Mr George said: “Improving internet coverage, and take-up across mid Wales is critical to tackling rural isolation, enhancing connectivity and supporting our economic prospects.

“With a higher proportion of households in Montgomeryshire without access to superfast broadband than any other constituency in Wales, with the exception of Ceredigion, it is clear that the Welsh Government must do more to avoid a bleak economic picture developing.”
