Re: £23m coast road improvement proposals. The proposed scheme sounds promising, hopefully speeding up journey times and improving road safety, partly by reducing driver frustration.

One wonders whether it will take longer than estimated to build – during which time delay problems could occur, and the cost may well be higher than estimated, as is often the case.

When it is finally finished and the traffic flows more quickly and efficiently, I do hope that the authorities will not then apply traffic lights at roundabouts and junctions, or put speed cameras on all the usefully improved areas, as this could make journey times worse than before and increase motorists’ frustrations.

Surely it would be far better to spend the appropriate money on maintaining highways with regular maintenance, such as drain clearing, gully sweeping, litter removal and pot-hole repair.

It would also be good if the wasteful practice of surface dressing was ended, which is often removed on high-wear areas withing days of application. The unpredictable and ever-loose surface also provides a safety risk for cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians, not to mention the damage caused to vehicles. I would suggest that roads should be properly resurfaced with hot-rolled macadam and drains reset as necessary. If funds do not allow this, damaged areas could be patched until the correct resurfacing can be carried out.

I imagine if you want motorists to drive safely, traffic police need to be a frequent and visible sight on a daily basis.
