A THREATENED household waste site near Llanarth may be given a reprieve under new proposals drawn up by Ceredigion county councillors.

Members of the local authority’s Thriving Communities Overview and Scrutiny Committee have been examining the county’s four household waste sites for ways to make £500,000 savings.

Question marks were raised over the future of the council-owned Rhydeinon, which serves householders mid-county, when County Hall sought the public’s online views over its use.

An operating licence which expired on 31 May was extended for a further period of six months to allow the council to consult on future options for the site.

Now the Household Waste Task and Finish Group have recommended that rather than looking at savings from one individual site, officers look at potential savings across the four sites creating potential savings on a pro-rata basis on the amount of tonnage of waste received at each.

The three other sites are:

• Council-owned Glanyrafon Industrial Estate, near Aberystwyth, which serves the north of the county and operated by the private sector until March 2020.

• Council-owned Cilmaenllwyd, near Cardigan, which serves the south of the county and is operated by the private sector under contract until May 2020.

• A privately-owned site in Lampeter also serves the mid-county area which is operated under contract until January 2024.
