TRAFFIC calming and improved pedestrian safety schemes across Ceredigion have won funding of more than £350,000 from the Welsh Government.
Schemes in Cardigan, Penrhyncoch, Lampeter and Aberaeron will all benefit from the funding announced from the Welsh Government’s Local Transport Fund, Safe Routes in Communities Scheme and the Road Safety Revenue Grant.
The funding announcement has been welcomed by the council which has said that it will improve facilities and safety for pedestrians.
The Local Transport Fund has provided £98,500 to the second phase of pavement improvements and traffic calming measures in Cardigan, following work already carried out near the town’s primary school.
Work will now be carried out in the vicinity of the secondary school, including pavement improvements to complete the pavement to the B&M store on Aberystwyth Road.
Both Cardigan Town Council and Ceredigion County Council have also provided funding to the scheme which overall will cost £115,000.
The council has also been awarded almost £200,000 from the Safe Routes in Communities scheme, with funding from community and town councils and Ceredigion council providing total funding of £225,000.
That money will be used to introduce a new 20mph zone with traffic calming in the area around Ysgol Penrhyncoch primary school after a campaign by local residents and Cllr Dai Mason.
Lampeter will see work on a £70,000 scheme as part of the second phase of work to improve pavements in the town. It will also see a new cycle shelter and scooter shelter provided at the junior section of Ysgol Bro Pedr.
There is also funding for the Rhiwgoch Footway Scheme between Ffos-y-ffin and Aberaeron, with £40,000 allocated to design feasibility work and land acquisition for the proposed scheme which has been demanded for years by local residents and councillors.
