PENWEDDIG pupils calling for a safe crossing on a “chaotic road” on the way to the school have been backed by politicians.

Tom Kendall, 15, and another pupil have gathered over 300 signatures from pupils and residents near the Aberystwyth school, calling for a crossing, and said they have had “good support” for the campaign.

They have also received the support of Ceredigion’s MP Mark Williams and AM Elin Jones, and local county council member Cllr Paul James, who has called for increased road safety in the area for a number of years.

Last week the pupils met with Mr Williams, and will hand the petition in to Ceredigion council chief executive Bronwen Morgan this week.

“We have had a lot of support which has been great,” Tom told the Cambrian News.

“It is often very unsafe getting to and from Penweddig and we are worried that an accident will happen. Lots of people we spoke to feel the same way so we decided to start the petition to hopefully get something done.”

Ms Jones and Cllr James have both called on the Welsh Government to act to install a crossing across the A44 to make the pupils’ access to school safer.

The Welsh Government has already agreed to install 20mph limits for the area around the school like the ones installed last year in Capel Bangor. Those will be installed in the next funding cycle from 2017-19.
