ABERYSTWYTH’S first Brass Extravaganza has been hailed a success after seeing a range of youngsters hailed competition winners and a performance from an award-winning band.

Members of Aberystwyth Silver Band and Ceredigion Music Service organised the event, which was held at Ysgol Penglais on Saturday, 21 January.

Bands from Aberystwyth and Machynlleth fought it out for prizes, with 16 youngsters taking part in individual competitions before a special concert by the Cory Band, named the best brass band in the world.

Heather Phillips, one of the organisers of the event, said she was pleased with how the day had gone.

She said: “It was a truly amazing day. I am so proud of the way all the members of Aberystwyth Silver Band have worked together to make this day possible.”

Betsan Downes, who won the 11 and under category, was joined as a winner by her brother Gronw Downes, who won the 15 and under category.

The winner of the 19 and under category was Ifan Llywelyn.

In the ensemble competitions, Band Ysgol Gymraeg scooped the 11 and under category, with Penweddig Junior Brass Band winning the 15 and under competition and Ysgol Bro Hyddgen’s quartet winning the 19 and under category.
