A bike trail closed earlier this year may be turned into a nature trail.

Campaigners have been fighting to reinstate the Waunfawr Bike Trail, which was closed earlier this year after the community council decided not to renew the lease.

During a meeting of Faenor Community Council last week, there was a strong feeling among some of the members that the site should be redesignated as a nature reserve.

The main concerns aired by councillors were the fear that the bike trail would outgrow its original remit and also that the council has long earmarked the site for conversion into a nature reserve, but that this was prohibited by the last lease.

There followed a lively discussion with strong convictions expressed on both sides, with the council resolving to contact Ceredigion County Council with a view to reacquiring the lease.

However, the council is to request that the application will not specify a specific use for the land so that the options of either a bike trail or a nature reserve may be discussed at a later stage.

The campaign to reopen and revitalise Waunfawr bike trail has been co-ordinated by local residents after learning that the community council decided not to renew the lease.
