Ramblers in Meirionnydd have been getting their hands dirty helping Gwynedd Council improve pathways.
When the Rights of Way staff from Gwynedd County Council asked for help with improvement works on a footpath, a group of volunteers from Meirionnydd Ramblers were happy to oblige.
The supports on a bridge over Nant Cwmcadian, near Pant-perthog in the Dyfi Forest, had become rotten and with handrails of rusting scaffolding poles, the bridge was clearly in need of some urgent attention.
“First of all it was necessary to carry the replacement timber and tools down a steep slope” said Gill Caves, footpath secretary for the Meirionnydd Ramblers Group.
“At one point we looked like worker ants going up and down the hill, each carrying pieces of wood and tools and on occasions having to work as a team to transport the large and heavy beams that were to be used for the main supports,” she added.
Although a technical drawing had been prepared by YGC, Gwynedd Council’s Engineering Consultancy, and contractors Geraint Micah and Keith Roberts were on hand to help out, much of the work was left to the volunteers to organise.
