LOUCHE Theatre brings Kindertransport to the Tabernacle, Machynlleth.
Directed by Harry Durnall and written by Diane Samuels, the play is set between 1938 and the outbreak of war, when almost 10,000 children, most of them Jewish, were sent by their parents from Germany to Britain. This is the story of one of them.
It is 1939. Eva Schlesinger is just nine years old when her mother puts her on a train headed into a foreign country and an uncertain future, knowing that they may never see each other again.
A German-Jewish child, Eva has been entered by her parents for the Kindertransport, a rescue measure undertaken by the British government to save Jewish children from Nazi persecution.
Arriving in England, Eva is taken in by the Miller family and, to all outward appearances, successfully adapts to English language and lifestyle.
However, her childhood experiences resonate down the years and the discovery of old letters and papers by her own daughter, forces Eva to revisit the past.
Louche Theatre are delighted to have been granted the rights to perform this modern classic in west Wales, the first time it has been presented in the area for over a decade.
Director Harry Durnall says: “Since first seeing Kindertransport some 10 plus years ago, I’ve wanted to direct it.
“We hear so much about refugees in the news, that I thought the time was ripe for doing so.
“I have gathered what I consider the perfect cast. Talented, committed, enthusiastic. They have all given so much to this project and I thank them for it.
“I’m sure our audiences will be spellbound by this remarkable story.”
