RESIDENTS have demanded a crackdown on cars, lorries and buses speeding through their village on the A487 before a child is involved in an accident.

They expressed their road safety concerns at a public meeting in Talybont, convened by Cllr Ellen ap Gwynn, the local councillor and leader of Ceredigion County Council.

The meeting raised the need for extended time periods in the intermittent 20mph speed limit through the village, a lowering of the speed limits around the village and more frequent speed enforcement.

The case for a formal zebra or pelican crossing near the school to ensure a safe crossing point for the children on the busy trunk road was also made.

Cllr ap Gwynn said: “I’m pleased that so many people came to this meeting and that we managed to put forward some concrete proposals as to how speed could be reduced in the village, and safety improved for residents and schoolchildren.

“In the meeting, we managed to prioritise the actions that we need to take place. First and foremost we want the Welsh Government to look at speed restrictions in the village and the surrounding area. This is the main cause for concern and, if dealt with, will instantly increase safety for villagers and children travelling to school and the Ysgol Meithrin.”
