LAST orders may have been called at a Garndolbenmaen pub – but residents are hoping they can raise enough money to take it over.

The Cross Foxes finally closed over the weekend after the owners had spent over four years trying to find a new buyer for the pub.

A public meeting has now been called to discuss the future of the pub and of the village itself, with suggestions that the Cross Foxes could become a community asset.

The meeting, which will be held at the village hall at 7pm on Thursday, 13 April, has been called by the Friends of Garn.

Plaid Cymru election candidate for the Dolbenmaen ward, Carroll Ann Morris, said she hoped there would be support for the taking over of the Cross Foxes by a community group.

She said: “We wish Liz and Martin all the best in their retirement, but we now need to focus on the village.

“The closure of the pub will have a knock-on effect on who wants to live in a village five miles from the nearest towns.

“We can now go after grants which are available in order to buy the pub and make it a community asset.

“This is our village so please come and have your say in the meeting.”

The current councillor for the village, Liberal Democrat Stephen Churchman, said while the closure of the Cross Foxes was a loss, he understood the decision and was still hopeful it could reopen.
