An historic chapel in Devil’s Bridge has been successful in securing over £325,000 in funding for restoration and a community development project.
Menter Gymunedol Mynach Cyfyngedig has been successful in securing £156,400 in funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Additionally, the project has secured £150,000 in funding from the Welsh Government through their Community Facilities Programme, as well as £25,000 from the Cefn Croes Community Trust Fund.
The funding will go toward the redevelopment of Mynach Chapel in Devil’s Bridge, ensuring the future of the chapel for future generations.
The project will see the chapel remain as a place of worship but the building will also be adapted into a much-needed community space for the residents of Devil’s Bridge and the surrounding area.
The chapel, which was built in the 1850s, is a focal point of the village.
The building was purchased by Menter Gymunedol Mynach Cyfyngedig in 2016 with the aim of redeveloping the current building to preserve the heritage element of this important asset in the community as well as extending the building to allow the development of a community hub.
Menter Gymunedol Mynach Cyfyngedig hopes the space will provide opportunities for social interaction, events and activities.
And now with the help and support from both funders work will begin on the building to make the planned renovations.
The renovations taking place will ensure that the existing building is preserved and renovated in a sympathetic way, taking into consideration the heritage and history of the building.
In addition to the redevelopment work a number of community events will take place during the project providing the local community with opportunities to be involved and sharing part of the heritage story.
Activities will include opportunities to purchase a pew door, the pew door will then be on display in the chapel post renovation with acknowledgement of the support from the new pew owners.
