A former town mayor fears there will be traffic chaos in Machynlleth town centre when work starts on the new Dyfi Bridge.

Gareth Jones says roadwork delays will lead to heavier traffic, including lorries, coming through Newtown Road and Maengwyn Street, where there is a hospital, school, fire and ambulance stations and residential areas.

The town council agrees – and will ask for traffic-calming measures to be installed.

The Welsh Government has finally given approval for the new Dyfi Bridge and work is expected to start later this year.

Former mayor Mr Jones urged to Machynlleth Town Council to push highways chiefs into providing traffic-calming measures in the town, warning that with possible disruption to traffic, it could see motorists using alternative routes, especially along Newtown Road and Maengwyn Street.

Town councillors have backed Mr Jones and said there is a need for such measures to ensure safety.
