After the sad news of another fatality on the A44, I would like to ask a question of the Welsh Government trunk road authority.

Do they realise the effect these temporary lights have on already tricky roads?

The lights cause traffic to be bunched into long trains which then cause frustration and bad driving decisions to occur during the onward journey, as well as accidents and near misses on the approach to the lights themselves.

One set of lights near Goginan have been up for nearly two years. I note that the signage has been improved around the lights since the accident.

Let’s hope the police and coroner’s report takes into account any liability on behalf of the trunk road authority or even the lorry involved in the original damage to the crash barriers.

Traffic control should be the last resort and the road defect should be tackled as an emergency in these circumstances.

If the lights weren’t there, maybe the biker would still be alive.
