Madam,
We are a community-based group of educators and concerned parents saddened that, with cuts to school budgets, and as with so many other subjects, German no longer is offered on the curriculum in Ceredigion schools.
In view of Germany’s strong economy, German is one of the most opted-for languages in secondary schools in London and other places. As Britain as a whole and Wales in particular redefine their positions in a global economy, we feel that young people from Ceredigion should not miss out on important opportunities, skills and qualifications that may help them when competing for jobs and university places.
We would therefore be grateful if, through the Cambrian News, we could let readers know that there will be a German Language GCSE course, with a beginners’ course between 4pm and 5pm and an intermediate course from 5pm to 6pm on Fridays at 11 Baker Street, Aberystwyth, starting on 11 January.
There will be a team approach to teaching involving native German speakers and the option of learning through the medium of both Welsh and English. The course will be free and open to all, although there may be a cost to cover teaching materials.
There will also be an opportunity to learn Mandarin through the medium of Welsh on Wednesdays from 5pm to 6pm, starting 16 January at the same location. This course is particularly suited to young learners.
We are grateful to Aberystwyth Town Council for facilitating this venture.
