Madam,

I wish to express my disappointment in the British Justice System (‘Cut in jail term for death driver ‘an insult’, Cambrian News, 14 April). There is no justice. Miriam Briddon was a beautiful and talented young lady with her whole life ahead of her. She left her home early Saturday evening to drive to visit her boyfriend. She was driving along innocently and responsibly when she was sadly involved in a collision with a drunk driver. His name is Entwistle. The consequences of his actions took the life of a beautiful, talented and much-loved young girl. It has left a family devastated at the loss of a much-loved daughter, sister, granddaughter and girlfriend. There are strict alcohol limits for drivers in England and Wales. Entwistle chose to ignore the law and consumed considerably more than the legal limit. He knowingly got into his vehicle and drove – with devastating consequences. It was reported that he came perilously close to killing another innocent person prior to killing Miriam.

He was given a very lenient sentence for taking Miriam’s life, but to have his jail term cut disgusts me and sickens me to the core. I understand and agree that defendants should have credit for an early plea but this should be at the first or possibly the second court hearing not over a year later and two weeks before the trial, by which time the witnesses have been called and committal papers prepared. I strongly feel that no credit should be given so late in the case.

I am aware that no matter what length of sentence Entwistle is given it will not bring Miriam back, but surely she and her family deserve justice for this heinous crime committed towards their daughter. Entwistle’s sentence will be short by comparison to the life sentence this family will have to endure.

I knew Miriam personally, she was beautiful inside and out, she was an extremely talented young lady with a very bright future ahead of her. I am a family friend and it is heart-breaking to see the devastation that this mindless act has had on them and the community as a whole who have shared their pain.

We all wanted Justice for Miriam but this hasn’t happened.

Yours etc
