A TREGARON woman is to run this year’s Cardiff 10k to raise money for a charity which has supported her younger brother following his life-changing kidney disease diagnosis.
Angela Evans, 26, has pledged to raise funds for Kidney Wales, the charity which supports thousands of patients and their families across Wales suffering from the effects of kidney disease.
Angela’s younger brother, Lewis, 24, was diagnosed with chronic renal failure in October 2015 and has since had a successful kidney transplant.
A promising rugby player and athlete, Lewis began to feel unwell and after a visit to the doctor and subsequent tests, Lewis was told he was suffering from a progressive loss of kidney function, and would need a transplant as soon as a kidney match became available.
As he waited for a match, Lewis then began the process of receiving dialysis treatment, three times a week in four-hour-long sessions.
Lewis, Angela and their family were left shocked by the diagnosis, and Kidney Wales played a vital role in guiding and educating them throughout the process.
In January of this year, after 16 months on the transplant list, a match was found for Lewis, and he underwent a full kidney transplant.
Fortunately, the procedure went well, and Lewis’ body accepted the kidney. He was discharged soon after, but still regularly attends support sessions with the Can Do Support group, set up by Kidney Wales to help young adults living with renal failure.
