AROUND 200 miles of roads in Ceredigion remain in poor condition, but the percentage has fallen for the first time in five years following council investment.

A council vow in 2013 to tackle the problem saw £4.6m pumped in to improve A and B roads, while minor C roads - which make up the majority of Ceredigion’s poorest roads - were left alone.

New Welsh Government data released this month found that now 15 per cent of Ceredigion’s more than 1,400 miles of roads are in “need of further investigation” and are in an “overall poor condition” - down from 15.4 per cent last year.

Ceredigion is the second worst county for the state of roads, and one of just two authority areas in Wales where 15 per cent or more of roads are classified as “poor”.

Powys retains the highest percentage of roads in Wales described as in “overall poor condition”, topping one-fifth of all roads for the second year running.
