A GROUP of students have called for a rethink on plans to abolish a key post at Aberystwyth Arts Centre that would “affect the ability of the centre to attract top quality exhibitions and artists”.
The Students in Support of the Arts Centre group has started a petition in protest at plans to replace the exhibitions technician, with a more general position involving a broader range of duties for lower pay.
The move is part of a broader reorganisation of the exhibitions team at the centre as Aberystwyth University continues to streamline operations at the centre in the face of mounting losses.
The group said: “The creation of a more generalist post with a wider range of responsibilities means that it will, in all likelihood, become more difficult to attract the world-class artists that Aberystwyth Arts Centre has always been able to bring to the town.
“Situated in a small town in rural Wales, the Arts Centre has always punched above its weight in terms of bringing top names to Aberystwyth.
“Celebrated artists often demand that time and personal attention is given to the organisation of their project, otherwise they will exhibit somewhere else."
