STUDENTS at Coleg Ceredigion took part in traditional Hen Galan (Old New Year) celebrations.
Bonni Davies from the Gwaun Valley, near Fishguard, accompanied by traditional folk ensemble Bois y Wlad, visited both campuses to talk to students about the various traditions and songs associated with Hen Galan and to share her experiences from childhood up to the present day.
Hen Galan falls on 13 January, the Old New Year as marked by the Julian calendar which held sway throughout Britain until the Gregorian calendar was introduced in 1752. Hen Galan was once regarded as more important than Christmas for Gwaun Valley residents, with special food and drink prepared well in advance.
Lewis, Brian and Eurfyl, of Bois y Wlad highlighted various activities in the Pembrokeshire area including the use of the Mari Lwyd whereby groups visited households accompanied by a ghost-like horse costume.
