A PENGLAIS school pupil suffered burns to her legs so severe she was faced with the possibility of amputation when petrol was thrown on a fire at a beach party.

Sixteen-year-old Llyr Jones was at a beach party in Ynyslas with friends when someone threw petrol on the fire, leaving her with first and second-degree burns to the back of her legs.

Speaking to the Cambrian News this week, Llyr’s mother, Diane Jones, said that when a friend called for an ambulance, they were told by the operator they could not send one because a postcode could not be provided.

With the help of some friends, Llyr, who has finished her GCSEs and is going on to study A-levels at Penglais School, managed to make it to the car park at Ynyslas Turn, where they got some help from people who were camping there.

“Two or three people helped Llyr to the car park and, purely by luck, there were three women staying in a campervan who happened to be first aiders,” Mrs Jones said.

“They had big tanks of water with them and they poured this all over Llyr’s legs. They also kept her really, really warm to stop her from going into shock, which was praised by the staff at A&E.”

Rob Jeffery, the Welsh Ambulance Service Trust’s head of operations for the Hywel Dda Health Board area, said: “We are sorry to hear about Llyr’s accident and hope that she is recovering well. We can confirm that we have received a concern regarding this incident and will be looking into the circumstances and liaising with Llyr and her family going forward.”
