Madam,
I write in response to your correspondent Hugh Jones (last week’s letters, ‘Antics of Hamilton beggar belief’).
Nathan Gill and those other UKIP AMs who believe it is possible to remain both as an MEP and represent a constituency in the Welsh Assembly Government are both cynical and hypocritical.
On the one hand, Mr Gill urges us to believe that they are not a one-issue party and asserts that UKIP has a positive role to play in the Welsh Assembly across a range of issues relevant to our country, whilst on the other hand, having actively campaigned against the EU and having succeeded in persuading over half of us in Wales that the EU and all its institutions are corrupt and undemocratic, they continue to want to play a role in the EU Parliament.
Could this be anything to do with the fact that UKIP has been built upon and funded by allowances from the EU Parliament to the tune of over £2m per annum in recent years?
I hold no brief for UKIP (or for Mr Hamilton) and believe that the presence of UKIP members in our Welsh Assembly is an aberration and an abomination, given the funds which have been directed by the EU towards Welsh communities and services.
It is clear that if any UKIP MEPs had any principles they would all have resigned from the EU Parliament on the morning of 24 June and refused any further funds from or dealings with the institution they all profess to hate so much. Their failure to do so reveals their true allegiances.
So much for Mr Farage and his so called ‘Independence Day’.
So come on Mr Gill et al, instead of wanting your cake and eating it, show us that you mean what you say and at least give your full commitment to our government in Wales and try to help set policy so as to mitigate some of the damage that will be done to our communities by Brexit.
Yours etc
Phil Griffiths, Arthog Terrace, Arthog.
