Madam,

I find it difficult to believe that O Jean Thomas, of Harlech (Cambrian News letters, last week, ‘Where have you been?‘) asked “Where has E Roberts been over the last few months while impending toilet closures were the talk of Gwynedd?”.

While we in Pwllheli were not unaware that radical financial slashing and closures were imminent, no right-thinking resident would have believed that our palatial suite of conveniences in Y Maes (town centre) would appear on a leaked short-list of possible casualties. We thought this iconic, white-tiled edifice was an untouchable national treasure - sancrosanct even.

Even more distressing are the most recent whispers about plans for the combined closures of both this toilet block and the adjoining bus and coach station in Y Maes. This vast and valuable strategic site could then house yet more cloned shopping and eating outlets. It could also help to bolster Gwynedd Council’s depleted coffers.

Could such a grand scheme of dual destruction have been hatched by high-flying, whizzkid master planners and advisors based in Cardiff or some other far-flung outpost?

Yours etc

E Roberts
