AN OUTRAGED town councillor has accused festival organisers of showing a “total disregard” for disabled people.

Dolgellau town councillor Ray Stubbs, who uses a mobility scooter, raised the complaint at a town council meeting last week.

He suggested that Sesiwn Fawr planners had not considered the needs of wheelchair or mobility-aid users when setting up the event causing them a “nightmare”.

Cllr Stubbs said: “I’ve had a lot of complaints from disabled people and wheelchair users.”

“There seems to be a total disregard for people who use wheelchairs or scooters.

“All the ramps and dropped kerbs are blocked as Sesiwn Fawr have put various items and barriers across them, especially at the top of Eldon Square.

“I needed to go the pharmacy but I couldn’t get through and had to go on a massive detour around town.

“There was a lot of people in town too and I struggled to get through, it really was a nightmare.”

Cllr Branwen Rhys Dafydd, who plays a key role in organising the popular festival, had given the council her report on the event in July which she felt had gone positively.

“I thought that its been a whacking success and I would like to thank everyone who made that possible, especially local people, they really support and make the festival,” she said. “We are currently planning for next year’s event and looking for feedback.”

Cllr Rhys Dafydd promised to pass on Cllr Stubbs’ comments to the festival organisers.
