A COUNCILLOR has said it would be “absolutely appalling” if proposals to remove weekend waste collections and community recycling sites in Machynlleth went ahead.
Originally due to be discussed at Powys County Council’s Cabinet meeting this week, a report which claimed extra weekend collections in Machynlleth were partly to blame for a waste services overspend of £385,000 will not now be discussed until an unspecified date sometime in May.
However, Cabinet members were set to decide yesterday (Tuesday) whether to accept a recommendation to reduce the approximately 80 community recycling — also called ‘bring’ — sites across Powys, two of which are in Machynlleth and Llanbrynmair.
Speaking to the Cambrian News this week, county council member for Machynlleth, Cllr Michael Williams, said it would be “absolute nonsense” for the town to lose its ‘bring’ site, considering it is used so much by the community.
“What the report is saying is to ask the Cabinet to approve a review of the 80 ‘bring’ sites, with the review to take place area by area in consultation with local members,” Cllr Williams said.
“It would be absolute nonsense if they removed Machynlleth’s ‘bring’ site because of the heavy use made of all the facilities there, such as recycling points for bottles, cardboard and garden waste.”
