TWO important paths in Penparcau will be widened and resurfaced by the end of March, the council has announced.

Ceredigion County Council made the announcement following claims from a Penparcau man that the money could be better spent on cutting hedges along the footpaths approaching St Brieuc Bridge, as reported in the Cambrian News earlier this month.

The council has this week confirmed that it will widen the path between Fifth Avenue and the Rheidol Cycle Trail to three metres, as well as repairing St Brieuc Bridge and installing a larger parapet for the safety of cyclists.

The proposals include creating a new segregated entrance for motorists accessing the allotments nearby.

In addition, the footpath which runs through Penparcau Park and connects with the underpass leading to Llwyn yr Eos Primary School will also be widened to three metres, making it suitable for use by cyclists and pedestrians.

The latter, which will complement the extension to Penparcau Community Centre along with providing an improved route to the primary school, will also see improved lighting.

Cllr Alun Williams, Cabinet member for transport, said: “We receive regular requests from residents in Penparcau for better facilities for cyclists, so our officers have put a lot of thought into designing these schemes which will encourage both walking and cycling and improve safety for everyone."
