Rotary Club

THE CLUB’S Young Chef of the Year competition held on Tuesday, 24 November, was a great success again this year. Eight pupils competed on the night, and were tasked to prepare, cook and serve a two-course meal from a country of their choice.Chefs’ dishes ranged from popular Italian, Indian, Mexican and American dishes, to lesser known French and Cajun recipes.Judges have become used to seeing some colourful, exciting and appetising dishes at this annual event, and they were certainly impressed this year with the quality and flavours of the meals produced by all the competitors.Standards were very good according to competition judge Badescu Constahtin Gabriel, who said “it was a very difficult decision”. Known as Gaby to his friends, he has been the chef at the Penhelig Arms, Aberdyfi, for the past 18 months and in that time has earned the restaurant an AA rosette. Members of Tywyn Rotary Club are overjoyed to know that a pupil from Ysgol Uwchradd Tywyn will be in with a chance to represent the town in the London final, of which there is a chance to win a week’s holiday in Italy and £2,500, that they have arranged for the winner to be able to visit the kitchen at the Penhelig Arms as often as they wish to gain experience and further enhance their cooking and presentation skills.Prizes were awarded by Rotary Club president Stephanie Purcell. The winner was Charlie Wagstaff, who came in second place last year, who prepared French chicken Dijon with fresh herbs, a side of dauphinoise potatoes and a green vegetable salad. For dessert, Charlie served small meringue crowns, topped with freshly whipped double cream, fresh chopped strawberries and strawberry and raspberry coulis. In second place was Ellen Hughes with Emily Lumley in third.Congratulations also to Carys-Anne Jones, Glesni Reacord, Kieren Hope, Nathan Turner and Pippa Rollings who, without exception, produced mouth-watering dishes.Charlie will now go on to represent the school in the north Wales round to be held at Connah’s Quay in February. Rotary Club members Christine and Peter Orme have already very kindly volunteered transportation for Charlie.
