THE FUTURE of a war memorial at the soon-to-be-closed Aberystwyth Post Office remains uncertain, with no plan in place for when or where it will be moved.
Following the Post Office’s decision to close the Great Darkgate Street branch and relocate it inside the WH Smith branch on Terrace Road, concerns have been raised about the memorial to post office workers from Aberystwyth who lost their lives in the First World War.
Ceredigion MP Mark Williams, who has been involved in the unsuccessful campaign to save the branch, said he remains “unclear” what is happening with the memorial and has called for answers from the Post Office.
“I am unclear what discussions the Post Office has had with the local branch of the Royal British Legion in regards to the location of the Post Office’s war memorial,” he added.
The bronze plaque inside the Great Darkgate Street building is dedicated to the men of the Aberystwyth postal district who lost their lives in the First World War.
The Post Office said the memorial will be handled “with care and sensitivity” when the relocation takes place in November, but moving the plaque has been labelled “sacrilege” by campaigners.
No further details of any agreed plans for the memorial’s move have been forthcoming.
Roger Gale, general manager of the Post Office Crown and W H Smith network, said: “We are working with Royal Mail to identify the most appropriate place to relocate the memorial to so that members of the public can continue to pay their respects to those of our colleagues who sacrificed their lives."
