NFU Cymru is absolutely right to highlight the threat of future trade deals to our food and farming (Cambrian News, 8 October). Even more so, since US trade aspirations are not really about allowing imports of American products with lower standards - they are about importing the whole American economic and regulatory model.

Make no mistake, a US deal - and those that follow in its footsteps - has the power to change our lives forever and for the worse. With little power of redress, we could see ourselves with unregulated digital monopolies, a sweeping ‘liberalisation’ (i.e. privatisation and deregulation) of services (including the NHS) and an abandonment of the ‘precautionary principle’ when it comes to safety.

Trade deals set the rules of the game and the stakes have never been higher. I urge everyone to give serious thought to the sort of country and society they want to be part of after Brexit - and to support the campaigns to protect our democracy.
