A decision on the new Dyfi Bridge is expected before the end of the year, but Montgomeryshire AM Russell George insists urgent action is needed to prevent floodwater on the A487 causing diversions of 30 miles.

The Welsh Government Transport Minister said the decision would be made later this year but Mr George says that’s too late because bad weather conditions often lead to flooding and the closure of the A487 and causing diversions of around 30 miles.

The road was closed again after heavy rain on Monday, 30 September, and Mr George called for action while quizzing Transport Minister Ken Skates at the Senedd on Wednesday, 2 September.

Mr Skates said that the scope of the project had been altered during the development phase, meaning he needs to consider the final costs, but expected to make a decision by the end of the year.

Local residents and local councillor Michael Williams have been calling for more urgency for the scheme since things stalled.

Mr George backed those calls, and said: “The Dyfi Bridge was not designed to carry the current volume of traffic, and is a major pinch point on the A487.

“The road is also often closed due to frequent flooding, causing traffic to take a diversion of up to 30 miles.

“The bridge has been closed yet again so it is imperative that this pinch point is resolved at the earliest opportunity."
