A LLANBADARN Fawr veterinary practice has urged dog owners to ensure their pets are microchipped after a seriously injured stray dog had to have a leg amputated.

New legislation means that all dogs must be chipped from the age of eight weeks, and Ystwyth Veterinary Practice has appealed to dog owners to ensure that they follow the legislation after the practice failed to find the owner of a dog that suffered a serious roadside injury.

Kate O’Sullivan, of the practice, said the dog, named Daisy by practice staff, had been found by the side of the road with a serious injury to her front right leg.

As Daisy had no collar and was not microchipped, her owner has still not been found. She will now be re-homed as she recuperates from her operation.

Kate said: “A stray dog was brought to us last weekend by a kind lady who had found it, injured, by the side of the road. Daisy had no collar, nor a microchip so it was now possible to trace her owner quickly, and in fact, despite putting information onto social media, no owner has yet come forward.

“Meanwhile, Daisy had suffered severe trauma to her front right leg, and after two days it became apparent that amputation was the only option, as there was no surviving blood supply to the paw.
