Schools across Powys are appealing for volunteer governors, with vacancies currently available in Machynlleth, Llanidloes and other communities.

Powys County Council is encouraging residents from a wide range of backgrounds to consider taking on the role, which involves helping schools set priorities, monitor performance and maintain educational standards.

Among the schools seeking representatives are Ysgol Bro Hyddgen in Machynlleth and Llanidloes Schools Federation, where two local authority governor positions are available. Crossgates C.P. School is also among those with vacancies.

The council says applicants do not need previous experience working in education or to have children attending the school. Instead, people with backgrounds in business, finance, volunteering and community organisations are encouraged to consider how their skills could benefit local pupils. School governors work alongside headteachers and staff to provide strategic leadership and oversight. Their responsibilities include monitoring educational standards, scrutinising budgets, supporting safeguarding arrangements and ensuring schools remain accountable to their communities. Governors are also expected to attend meetings, participate in training and provide constructive challenges to school leadership.

Councillor James Gibson-Watt, Powys County Council's Cabinet Member for a Learning Powys, said governors made an important contribution to education throughout the county.

He described volunteering as "a rewarding way to give something back to your community" while helping shape local education.

The council says new local authority governors receive induction and ongoing training to help them understand their responsibilities and contribute effectively.

Most school governors serve four-year terms, although the exact arrangements depend on the type of appointment.

Applications for the current round of local authority governor vacancies must be submitted by 5pm on Monday, 2 November.

Residents interested in applying can find details of available positions and application forms on Powys County Council's School Governors webpage.
