BUSINESSES on the Llyn have clubbed together to make the beaches safer this summer.
A volunteer beach patrol warden took to the waters on a jet ski in Abersoch Bay over the weekend following months of planning in a link up between Gwynedd Council and local businesses.
The wardens, who will ride jetskis donated by a Pwllheli company, Ideal Boat, will ensure that speed limits for personal watercraft riders are observed, anti-social behaviour curtailed and swimmers kept safe.
The organisers now hope that their private/public sector initiative can be rolled out across the region to help keep as many beaches and bays supervised by trained personnel as possible.
Andrew Donaldson, one of the directors at Mickey’s Boatyard & Beach Café - one of the key backers - said he felt a “social responsibility” to do what he could for the region.
“It’s always better to be proactive and do something now rather than retrospectively after a tragic accident,” he said.
“It’s good for the area and we’re hoping that our model can serve as blueprint for other areas around Gwynedd.
“I think Black Rock Sands is next, I’ll be contacting them soon to see if they would be interested in a similar scheme.
“Manned by trained staff and qualified Bwlchtocyn volunteers, it is hoped this presence will help ensure everyone can enjoy our beautiful bay safely.
“We can help craft users to understand local bylaws, adhere to the four-knot speed limit, launching regulations and safe practice when on the water.
“Give us a wave if you see us, we are here for your safety on the water!”
