Madam,

I feel we should try to correct the despondent image of Gwynedd that some people created on BBC Question Time in Bangor when debating their future.

They might go down to the great city of Cardiff, the castle, the cathedral, the Millennium dome, the Slug and Lettuce.

And then down to the extraordinarily beautiful modern front of the bay – the Assembly buildings, the Mermaid front, the open waters, tide free, and the striking sculptures. My favourite is in bronze, showing an overturned clinker built fishing boat. Europe has nothing to compare with it. Hilaire Beloc, the great Sussex poet, wrote the same about the panorama of Cardigan Bay from the Llyn Peninsula.

We have all this and, if we stay in the UK, a chance to continue to surpass every country in the world except the US in key areas like IT, my own speciality. Offer youngsters the choice between working for Siemens in Berlin or at the front face of technology in Cardiff. No contest.

Yours etc,

Graham Tottle, Maes Artro, Llanbedr.
