Madam,

Travelling around Gwynedd frequently lately has certainly been part of a learning curve.

Straight away I will say I am so very glad not to be in the heart of a big town or city. Driving skills seem to be varied and often I am amazed more accidents do not happen.

I am always a passenger, so have ample time to observe. There is so much carelessness, downright lack of thought for others and a prevalence of “you can be first... after me!”.

I do not believe in the blame game, but undeniably there are faults and failings, and responsibility does have to be taken. It behoves all of us to be mindful for, and of, others.

Manners are invariably an after-thought and signalling seems to be a game of “now you see me, now you don’t”; What I remember as courtesy of the road seems to be rare.

There is a limit to what the police can do/advise, and, equally, only so much road signs can instruct/direct.

When there is a call by the police for witnesses, I ponder if there were any at all, for such a call to go out.

Every time, with any accident there are wrecked/torn lives and a wide circle of misery, torment and questioning for those not directly involved, but near enough to be family members and/or friends. Equally, I think of those on duty. What are their thoughts and feelings?

There are good, thoughtful, conscientious drivers out there but we need more.

Yours etc,

Jill Baxter, Abergynolwyn.
