Up to eight centimetres of rain could fall in parts of West Wales tomorrow, meteorologists have warned.

A yellow weather warning has today been issued by the Met Office for between 7am on Friday and 3am on Saturday, with a band of rain accompanied by strong winds expected to cause disruption.

The warning had initially only been placed across South Wales, but has this morning been extended further north.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “A band of heavy rain will move eastwards across the areas on Friday morning before clearing to the east early Saturday.

“Many areas are expected to see 20 to 30mm, with Dartmoor and higher ground of South Wales likely to see some 60 to 80mm.

“After wet weather on preceding days, some flooding is likely, this in turn affecting transport and travel.

“The heavy rain will be accompanied by strong winds and a risk of thunderstorms. Gusts of 50 to 60mph are likely around coasts and over higher ground.”

Because the ground is already saturated in large parts of Wales, flooding of homes and businesses is possible and some roads may be flooded. The heavy rain has prompted Natural Resources Wales (NRW) to ask people to be alert.Sean Moore, Duty Tactical Manager for NRW said: “The predicted heavy rain is likely to cause disruption to parts of South and Mid Wales over the next 48 hours, so we’re advising people to keep up to date with flood alerts and warnings issued in their areas.“Our emergency response workers will be at key sites checking defences are in good working order and working with partners to minimise any potential risks to communities.“Please remember that flood water is extremely dangerous, and people should not attempt to walk or drive through it unless instructed by the emergency services.”
