Madam,

I wrote to this paper prior to the closure of Natwest in Machynlleth, and at that time I had the feeling that Barclays bank would vacate the town, in short order.

And so it is, on 22 September.

I won’t reiterate all the previous arguments about loss of service to individuals and businesses, and the inconvenience such a change creates, but there has to be an intelligent solution.

Natwest’s former building in Maen-gwyn Street is still vacant, as will be Barclays, near the clock tower, very soon.

Keep the Barclays building. It is central to the town. It is secure. It has a cashpoint. It has a night safe. It has office space, and counter space.

The shrunken Post Office, or travelling to Aberystwyth, or Dolgellau, is not a solution.

Why can the three banks, HSBC, Natwest, and Barclays, not share this existing banking space in Machynlleth?

Yours etc,

Steve Jagger, Machynlleth.
