AN ACTION man from Porthmadog is testing himself against the elements in some of Wales’ harshest terrains.

After successfully surviving for five days in the wild near his hometown of Porthmadog, the ‘wild man’ Carwyn Jones is back with a brand new challenge for himself.

The three-part S4C series Y Dyn Gwyllt: Tri Thymor sees Carwyn return to the wild with his faithful dog Gwen as he tries to live self-sufficiently in three unfamiliar areas and in three different seasons of the year.

“At the beginning of each challenge, I think, ‘oh my God, what am I doing here’,” says Carwyn, 37, who likes to spend time with nature as an escape from the hectic modern world.

“You can prepare as much as you like before getting there - how the landscape is going to be, what you’re going to eat - but you always have to adjust and you never know what’s going to happen.”

In the first programme, Carwyn leaves the familiar terrain of Porthmadog for the Pembrokeshire coast in summer; relying on his bush craft skills to survive and by hunting and foraging for food.

“Out of the three challenges, Pembrokeshire was the toughest,” says Carwyn, perhaps surprisingly.

“The area is known for its beauty and fertility, but this was the first time I’d ventured beyond my local area and I was a bit naive. The ground was a lot barer than I expected and the typical summer weather didn’t help either!”
