WORK on a new pedestrian crossing near Ysgol Rhydypennau and widening of the pavement in the north of Bow Street will begin next week.

The first phase of the project will install a traffic light crossing outside the school near the entrance to Cae’r Odyn and adapt the existing pavement from the school to Llandre to include a cycle lane.

The work is expected to take eight weeks to complete and will also extend the 30mph speed limit from the junction with the B4353 near Thomas Brothers Garage to the village of Llandre, a stretch of road that currently has a 40mph speed limit.

Parking improvements near Ysgol Rhydypennau will also be introduced, introducing a new one-way system and parking bays.

A proposed second phase of the Active Travel scheme would see shared use footpaths, introducing a cycle lane, extended south through Bow Street, linking up eventually with the new railway interchange which is currently under construction.

The second phase of the project is currently in the feasibility stage with hopes the project will enter construction phase in 2021.

A spokesperson for the Welsh Government said: “The first phase is widening the existing footway at the north end of Bow Street and improving the pedestrian crossing outside the school.

“The crossing is being relocated to provide a more direct alignment into the school, and the lay-by is being remodelled to create a one way system to improve the safety for parents dropping off and picking up their children.

“This is the first phase of improvements to Bow Street and we plan to widen the footway through the village in subsequent sections subject to the availability of funding.

“We have worked closely with Ceredigion County Council as this is identified on their Active Travel plans as well as tying in with the Transport for Wales improvements to Bow Street station.”

Local county councillor Paul Hinge welcomed the work, saying: “It’s good to see the active travel plans being implemented giving people the ability to access Bow Street’s new interchange in the second phase of the scheme.”
