ABERYSTWYTH University made the most of their opportunity to get back to winning ways in the MMP Mid Wales League division two as they notched an entertaining 3-2 win over Rhayader Town at Park Avenue on Monday.
Keen to bounce back from their narrow defeat to Borth United three days earlier, the students made a great start as early goals from Pablo De Torres and Leo Kelly had put them in control after 20 minutes.
Rhayader, who have had an inconsistent campaign so far, hit back with an emphatic strike from Tony Davies before the break - and their fightback continued in the second half as top scorer Jamie Evans equalised for the visitors on the hour.
The students quickly regained the lead, however, when a quick counter-attack saw Cormac O’Byrne round the keeper to score his first goal for the senior team, and the University held out for the points with a gritty effort right through the team.
The scheduled top of the table showdown on Friday night between Machynlleth and Penparcau was the first fixture to be cancelled due to the wet conditions.
There was no improvement on Saturday as the entire division two schedule was wiped out, including Aberystwyth University’s match at Waterloo Rovers, and Borth United’s match away at Presteigne.
Elsewhere Dolgellau’s match against Knighton Town, Abermule against Churchstoke, Dyffryn Banw against Rhayader Town, and Forden United against Newbridge-on-Wye were also called off.
Despite a month of wholesale postponements in the MMP Mid Wales League, secretary Phil Woosnam believes that the season is still scheduled to end on time.
“There is no reason for an extension at this moment, as the policy that I have adopted over many years now of playing more matches early on in the season looks like it is once again vindicated,” he said.
In division one, Radnor Valley have the biggest backlog, with 13 league games still to play, and Berriew have 12 games, whilst in division two Waterloo Rovers also have 12 league games left, and Dolgellau 11.
