MATTHEW Bishop says that his Aberystwyth Town side has ‘nine cup finals’ to go after they revived their hopes of making the Europa League Play-Offs with a crucial 1-0 win over Airbus UK Broughton at Park Avenue.
Their third win over the Wingmakers this season moved them away from relegation danger, and level on points with seventh-placed Llandudno - and after three straight home losses it was a satisfying response from the Seasiders.
“I’m pleased with the performance, I thought we defended very well,” said Bishop after the game.
“We created some good chances today, but didn’t really take them.
“I’m also really pleased that the three players that we brought into the Club have made a difference.
“It’s been a long, long week after the dismal performance that we put on last week against Prestayn.
“I’d asked the players to bounce back and show me they care, and I think they have done that today.
“Hopefully people go away today realising that we’ve got a good team that is worth getting behind.
“We do know what we are doing, and we’ve got some good players, but we have a young group of lads.
“We have had an awful month, but I am delighted that we’ve started the second half of the campaign with a win, and a clean sheet.”
Defender Will Bell had returned to Bala Town on the eve of the transfer deadline, but Bishop has signed Malcolm Melvin, Dafydd Jones and Dylan Rees, and all three made very encouraging debuts.
With fellow January signings John Owen and Jamie Crowther also establishing themselves in the team, and Geoff Kellaway returning from a six-week lay-off, Bishop will feel he has strength in depth.
“We are always on the look-out for new players, but people have got to realise that where we live it is very hard to get them,” he said.
“It’s a long way to Aberystwyth, and it’s been difficult to recruit.
“We are looking for the right types of players to come here, and I’m delighted that Malcolm, Dafydd and Dylan have joined us.
“They have all got pedigree and experience in the professional game, and they showed that today.
“Now I’ve got a decent team, and Geoff’s come back in after a very frustrating last six weeks for him, struggling with an ankle injury.”
Looking to build momentum on Saturday, the Seasiders travel to face a Cefn Druids side whom they beat 3-0 at the Rock in December, before losing the home return 1-0.
“I’m not going to get carried away with the win over Airbus, it’s one of 10 games and we’ve got another nine cup finals,” said Bishop.
“It’s going to be tough and we have got no God-given right to be beating anybody. Cefn Druids are a good team and pose a lot of threats, and are well organised.
“Each week we’ve got to put in a similar kind of performance if we’re going to get anything, but the result and the clean sheet today allows us to get some rhythm.”
