A GUEST house owner said she had “bought a lottery ticket just in case” after finding 172 double yolk eggs in a box of 180 from a farm near Aberystwyth.

Ceris Meredith, of Glyn Peris Guest House, near Llanberis in north Wales, admitted she was shocked when the first 10 eggs from the batch of Birchgrove eggs turned out to have two yolks.

After going through all 180 eggs in the batch from the farm based at Trawscoed, Ceris contacted the Guinness Book of Records as the double yolks continued to appear.

According to the British Egg Information Service, one in every 1,000 eggs on average is a double-yolker - although that number drops to around one in 100 when laid by young hens of 20 to 28 weeks old.

Finding 172 in a box of 180 is still a one in several billion occurrence.

The tray of eggs was bought from the greengrocer’s at Blakemore Wholesale Cash and Carry in Bangor.

They were supplied by Oaklands Farm Eggs - the company which merged with Birchgrove Eggs last year.

Sue Mintz of Oaklands Farm Eggs said the company was “amazed” when they were informed by Ceris of the event.

“I have read stories about how 12 eggs in a box being double yolks is incredible but we sold 172 double yolkers to our customer,” she said. “It was our Birchgrove brand of eggs that started in Aberystwyth.”
