A CHARITABLE trekker has completed the last leg of his epic London to Trawsfynydd walk to mark the legacy of Hedd Wyn.

Gwynedd Jones, who lives in Twickenham but is originally from Trawsfynydd, enjoyed an emotional homecoming as he finished the 250-mile walk from the Tower of London to his hometown in honour of the 100th anniversary of the war poet’s death.

Gwynedd embarked upon the challenge back in April to mark the centenary of the war poet’s death and to raise money for the British Red Cross.

Walking in stages on the weekends, the carpenter completed legs from the Tower of London to Teddington, Teddington to Windsor and from Windsor to Reading.

He then progressed to Bath and Bristol, across the old Severn Bridge, up along Offa’s Dyke and on to the Glyndwr Way towards Meirionnydd.

On Saturday, 29 July, Gwynedd began his last leg at 8am at Cymer Abbey, Dolgellau, before walking to Ganllwyd footbridge, Capel Penystryd and the final stop – Hedd Wyn’s Yr Ysgwrn farmhouse home in Trawsfynydd.

Throughout his walk, the 54-year-old has been carrying a ceramic poppy dedicated to Hedd Wyn with him and has already raised £1,880 for the British Red Cross in tribute to the 888,246 Commonwealth soldiers who lost their lives during the First World War.
