A 90-YEAR-OLD man died after his boat capsized in Gwbert estuary, an inquest has heard.
The inquest into the death of 90-year-old Arthur Roy Taylor (pictured), known as Archie to family and friends, was held in Aberystwyth on Wednesday.
The inquest heard how Mr Taylor, from Rossendale in Lancashire, had taken his sailing boat out from Teifi Boat Club on the morning of Saturday, 15 April.
A “fit and healthy” man and an experienced sailor, who lived in the Cardigan area until 2001, the inquest heard that Mr Taylor’s boat was seen capsized in the estuary by Peter Meriweather, whose house overlooks the area.
A massive land, sea and air search was launched after Mr Taylor’s boat was found lying on its side at Coronation Drive, near to the club, with its sails set.
Mr Taylor’s body was discovered washed up on a beach near Llangrannog two weeks later.
Ceredigion coroner Peter Brunton said there was “little detail” about what had happened to Mr Taylor after he set sail.
While pathologists gave the cause of death as unascertained, Mr Brunton said the cause of death was drowning, adding that “unascertained” was “too vague” and that he “can’t think of a reasonable alternative.”
Mr Brunton recorded a verdict of death by misadventure.
