WELL-KNOWN 90-year-old Penparcau pensioner Jackie Day had a lucky escape on Saturday when he was involved in a collision with a car, reigniting roady safety fears.
Despite being struck by a moving car on Penparcau Road, at around 11am on Saturday, local historian Jackie is recovering well at home after he was taken to Bronglais Hospital by ambulance, where x-rays revealed he suffered no broken bones and no serious injuries.
Penparcau Community Forum says the incident highlights the need for traffic-calming measures and is calling on the Welsh Government to de-trunk the A487 through the village.
A police spokesperson told the Cambrian News that no offences had been reported and no arrests made in connection with the incident.
The calls follow an unsuccessful campaign in 2014 in which the Forum petitioned the Welsh Government to de-trunk the A487 between the Southgate roundabout, Trefechan and Aberystwyth town centre.
Speaking to the Cambrian News, Mr Day said he did not blame the motorist whose car struck him, and said the pedestrian crossing should be closer to the shops.
“Years ago, there used to be a crossing by the butcher’s but they moved it, and then another crossing was built by the Post Office," he said. “The one they moved should be closer to the shops.”
